 The Guayasamín Effect

The idea is to create a series of up-close minimalist portraits using only the ultraviolet spectrum of light.

The portraits will feature an interaction between your face and you hands. This interaction is what I'm calling the “Guayasamín Effect” in reference to the work of Oswaldo Guayasamín.

 Mood Board

“The hands are the action.

The face is the witness.”

Technical Notes

  • No sunscreen or UV protection makeup

    • Because we are only using ultraviolet waves, sunscreen (or makeup with UV protection), looks like blackface on camera. (Visually interesting, but not what we are going for here.)

  • Wardrobe

    • There are no hard rules about wardrobe. Solid colors work best, and it is best to go either with dark or light tones to avoid muddy grays.

    • The choice of necklines and sleeves are something to consider.  Shoulders, neck and forearms can play well in the composition, but so can covering everything  except the hands and face. In general, whatever the choice is, it should be bold in whatever direction you choose. Stay away from middle of the road options.

    • Metallic jewelry is welcomed.

  • Lighting

    • The UV setup requires a lot of light. There will be three large strobes aimed straight at you, so in general…it’s always best to not look at the light directly.

Last Note

Kids are welcomed!

 Thanks!
